Somaliland in practical heritage skills.

Reintroduced lost knowledge in old
construction skills through oral accounts from elders and testing ideas 1:1 on
site with international experts.

This project is building capacity and enabling
local people to conserve and adapt the buildings they value by championing the
conservation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings and the reuse of the
embodied energy they contain which is central to the sustainable economic
development.

ABOUT: Jabir Mohamed is a researcher, architectural designer and heritage preservationist focused on preserving at-risk built heritage in the Somali Peninsula. As the founder and director of the RAAD RAAC Foundation & Studio, he leads projects dedicated to restoring cultural sites affected by war, neglect, and climate change. His work integrates architectural research, community-driven restoration, and sustainable design practices. Currently, Mohamed is spearheading a project with the support from the Commonwealth Heritage Forum, in collaboration with the Berbera Municipal Government to restore and create a museum of a historic site in Berbera, containing 18th-century Ottoman school and British colonial residencies.
